The Difference Between iPhone 5s and 5c

On September 10th, 2013, Apple officially introduced (for the first time) two new iPhone models: iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. The enhanced version of the original 5; the 5s follows the same tradition of releasing a faster and “super” version dating back since the 3G S model. However, this year was a little different when Apple decided to target a broader consumer base with a cheaper and more colorful version of the iPhone 5 labeled the 5c. Although, the choice might be easy for you if you are just looking to have a new iPhone for a lower price; it could be a tougher decision if you want to base your decision by your needs of a smartphone and what the two new different versions offer. In this article, we’ll dive into the differences between the 5s and 5c. Also, for some of us who are thinking about upgrading from a 5 to a new version, we will also detail the differences the 5s, 5c, and the original 5.

The same

The most notable similarity is the screen size of all three models. Both the new versions come in the original 4″ retina screen size. All three also have the same front-facing 1.2MP camera and 8MP iSight main camera (with the 5s have a slightly upgrade in aperture. After that there are similarities only between any two models. For instance, both the 5 and the 5c have the same A6 processor. The 5 and the 5s have the same dimensions and both weigh in at 112g.

The differences

The most obvious difference is that the 5c comes in a polycarbonate (fancy word for plastic) case in 5 different colors (Green, White, Blue, Pink and Yellow).  The 5s comes in the same aluminum casing as the original 5 but with only three new colors: Gold, Silver and Space Gray. Hardware improvements for the 5s are in the new A7 64 bit processor. Although this is a faster processor, it doesn’t necessarily mean that apps will now run faster. The main motivation for the processor upgrade is to improve battery life. With this new processor the 5s now can last almost an hour longer than the 5 (10 hours talk/250 hours standby opposted to 9 hours talk/225 hours standby).
